Gerd is a partner at Tiberghien. His tax practice covers professional and private estate taxation of the Belgian entrepreneur and HNWI, international corporate and private tax planning, death duties and estate planning and tax inspired migration from and into Belgium. He focuses amongst others on benefits & compensations, in particular with respect to ‘tailor made’ profit sharing schemes and stock option plans, both for Belgian and foreign corporations doing business in Belgium.
He also developed a special interest in tax issues relevant to Anglo-Saxon trusts, foundations and settlements and voluntary disclosure proceedings, anti-money laundering legislation and regulations especially in a world where banking secrecy is shrinking.
He is a regular speaker on (inter)national seminars and author of various articles on tax issues in leading journals such as “Tijdschrift voor Fiscaal Recht”, “Fiscale Actualiteit”, “Trusts & Trustees” and “Vermogensplanning in de Praktijk”.
He is a member of the IBA anti-money Laundering Action Group.
He is former President & Vice President of the Tax Commission of AIJA (Association Internationale des Jeunes Avocats), where he is now a honorary member.

His interest in international tax led him to be active in the International Fiscal Association, a.o. as Vice-President for many years of its Permanent Scientific Committee. Jacques is also a member of IBA, ABA and the Academy of Trust and Estate Law. He is frequently appointed as arbitrator in international cases by the International Chamber of Commerce. He is a member of the Brussels Bar since 40 years and a member of the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Board of the Belgian Association of Tax Lawers (BATL).

The first 22 years of his career, Werner worked for several Benelux law firms as a tax specialist in Antwerp, Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg and New York, and then settled in Brussels in 2000. Before joining AKD, he co-headed Jones Day’s Belgian and EU tax practice in Brussels.
Werner is very active in a number of international and local associations and networks, such as the American Chamber of Commerce in Belgium (AmCham), the Belgian Association of Tax Lawyers (BATL), the Flemish Bar Council, the International Fiscal Association (IFA) and the International Bar Association (IBA).
Werner is a frequent speaker at Belgian, European and international tax conferences and seminars and he has written numerous articles and contributions on Belgian, European and international tax law (most recently in the IBFD’s European Taxation). In January 2018, the Advocate General with the Belgian Court of Cassation explicitly referred to one of Werner’s publications on the prevention of double taxation under the Belgian-Dutch tax treaty, and the Court sided with Werner’s position, as advised by the AG. In the slipstream of LuxLeaks the Special Committee on Tax Rulings of the European Parliament (TAXE) called upon Werner in 2015 as one of the Belgian experts on tax rulings.

After his studies at the University of Ghent where he got a law degree, he obtained a tax law degree at the Université libre de Bruxelles. Since 2004 he worked with the law office Lauwers & Seutin. He is member of the Board of directors of the Belgian Association of Tax Lawyers since 2018. He co-founded Wanted Law Tax in fall 2021.
The emerging branch of tax law that relates to digital activities carries his particular interest. He follows these evolutions closely and participates by replying to public consultation and writing articles.
